The brief
A fourth birthday at a rented villa with a pool, a wooden deck and a garden that already looked good. Our job was to add a party without burying what was already beautiful — and to run all of it, so the parents could be guests at their own son's birthday.
What we built
We kept the palette soft and tropical: a white bounce castle under a garland of sage, terracotta and cream, a transparent bubble dome filled with balloons beside it, and a sweet table dressed in the same tones. Nothing plastic, nothing primary-coloured — it had to sit inside the garden rather than fight it.
How the day went
The pirate captain and his first mate arrived in character and stayed there. Within ten minutes the deck was dancing — and not only the children, the fathers too. Then everyone sat down in a row for the bubble show: bubbles bigger than the children, smoke caught inside them, and a lit finale that made the whole row gasp at once. Afterwards they ran barefoot across the grass chasing what was left of it.
What the parents got
Sonic came through for photographs, the ice-cream cart stayed open until the last guest, and nobody's mother carried a tray, chased a supplier or cleared anything away. They watched their son turn four.
