At eight they stop wanting to be told a story and start wanting to win something in front of their friends — so this party had no theme, only a format. The game props were built by hand so that nobody had seen them before, and run in rounds with a standing that changed every time, because as soon as one child is clearly winning the rest stop trying. Then the sound system came up under the bamboo roof and the whole group learned a routine together.

The brief

Eight years old — the age where a costumed character stops working and a competition starts. They do not want to be told a story any more; they want to win something, in front of their friends. So this party had no theme at all. It had a format.

What we built

The props, by hand, because the games only feel new if nobody has seen them before. A pink blow-the-ball run with straws and gates down its length, a tunnel box with a plate and a target to push a pom-pom across, and a set of stations laid out along the restaurant so groups could rotate through them rather than queue.

How the day went

Round after round, and the standing changed with every one — which is the whole point at eight, because as soon as one child is clearly winning the rest stop trying. Then the sound system came up under the bamboo roof, coloured light across the floor, and the entire group learned a routine together: arms out, one leg up, all of them off balance, all of them laughing at each other.

What the parents got

Three hours of children who did not once ask for a phone, and no decor bill for a theme an eight-year-old would have found embarrassing in the photographs anyway.
